My daughter has a '97 Mystique with a 2.0 Zetec engine and auto. The car just turned 50,000 miles and runs great. The problem we are having is the car idles too low (500 rpm) when in drive and the air conditioning is on. The Haynes Repair Manual refers to an "Idle Increase Solenoid Valve". Does anyone know if the 2.0 Zetec has this valve or what increases the rpms when the air conditioning is on. I know the engine rpms use to increase when turning the air conditioning on when the car was new. Thanks.

I have a 96 with the exact same problem (65,000 miles).
Independent mechanic tried to fix with no luck. Dealer says that it cannot be adjusted (computer chip controleld) but diagnostics will determine which component is not working properly and replace it. Cost to diagnose, $110. I told them to shove it! My daughter can live with low idle. Everything seems to be running fine otherwise.

As a note, I have a 96 with bout 60k miles.. same problem. I had someone diagnose it but couldn't find anything (not a dealer). I don't know if he checked the computer controls.

guys, this is normal idle speed when in gear. put it in neutral, and it should go back to around 1000 rpms. i also have a '97 mystique zetec automatic. it has 99000 miles on it, and still runs like a top. still has the stock timing belt and plugs and wires. dont mess with it if it ain't broke (although these will get replaced at 100K- the belt wont though). everyone with a zetec will tell you that theirs idles lower when you put it into gear. live with it. put it into neutral if you want smooth.

i will always have a comeback! :o)

Well, sort of disagree. I will live with it but.
Every car I now own has a normal idle speed of about 750 RPMs with no A/C and engine hot. The Ford dealer also states that normal should be 750 RPMs with no A/C on and engine hot.

I can live with the 600 though as long as it continues to run fine.

Thought I'd chime in to let everyone know that my little zetec is running at 680 @ idle while in drive and right at 800 in park/neutral when I hooked it up to the scanner. Oh, and for being a 4 banger, mines pretty smooth and quite while in gear.

I have a 97 Mystique Zetec with 62,500 miles on it and it has always idled low when in drive. It sometimes even goes as low as 450 rpms while sitting in traffic, but never stalls. It feels like it wants to though. I figure when it starts stalling, I'll get it fixed.

Mine normally idles at about 950 RPM's when the clutch is in and when out of gear, but I noticed yesterday when I left work I got to a stop sign and when I pushed the clutch in and held it there for a few mins while at the light the idle dropped to 500 and felt like it was going to stall, 1st time that has happened...now it does it every now and then... car has 56500 miles on it and the engine only has 21000 miles on it... Normal, or should I be worried?

My 2000 Focus idles around 650-750 rpms. Only 12000 miles on her.
