Has anyone attempted this? Removal of Y-Pipe and Cat. Would like to go straight from the header back to muffler? I am attempting to accomplish this on a Cougar, but looking for pictures, or any help!

Thanx,

Nutz

um, if you could find it, try to get an X Pipe for some backpressure on the exhuast to add some more power.

Um, we've been over this many times -- backpressure is NEVER good.

What you do want is to keep the exhaust velocity up. Going to a too-large system would reduce velocity and reduce power.

Not the same thing as backpressure.

I am just looking for someone who has done this or tried it on the 2.5 Duretec engine. Not trying to cause any arguments.

Also an X-pipe DOES NOT add back pressure. ANY back pressure is bad like Lance said (well discussed before as well!)

It's installed at the point the pulses meet in the individual pipes in order to increase the scavaging effect. (Basically a more efficient balance or H-pipe)

Also a misplaced H or X pipe is worse than none at all!

If you look under the car you will notice the fuel cell is in the way of running duals straight back.

You will either need to mimic the 4 90 degree bends of the stock setup or go under the fuel cell with the dual pipes.

Both ways have bone done before. (optimal pipe diameter is 2" mandrel)

Whatever way you choose. DO NOT use crush bends!!!

I hate to be a search Nazi (okay not really ) but this has been hashed to death numerous times before.

A few people have done it on here. They haven't removed the y-pipe but simply cut it before it dumped into a single pipe. Then, due to the fuel cell, they use flex pipes to take the exhaust down the driver side around the fuel cell and to the back of the car. The cat placement is really up to you. The x-pipe idea has been tossed around and a few have tried it. I think there are mixed reactions when it comes to it. Unless you have the perfect placement its honestly pointless and you can lose lots of power in the long run. Contact Stazi for more info.

3. The cat placement is really up to you.

1. Cutting the stock Y-pipe (or aftermarket mandrel Y) and making 2 seperate pipes is in effect removing the Y-pipe. 2 seperate pipes = no Y-pipe

2. Definitely DO NOT use POS flex piping nor crush bends. IMO if you are going to do a project like this as least do it worth a damn. Just think of the velocity & energy loss caused by 6-7 crush bends in EACH PIPE!
Also DO NOT use shared mufflers. (I.E. Dual in dual out) You will effectively be negating the entire dual setup letting the exhaust gasses mingle. Maybe even making it worse then a tuned Y-pipe would???

Also Dan Beggs (99 Cougar) has been running straight back duals for over a year with no problems.

3. For reference - remember there will be double of everything. If you want cats then you will need 2 of them. 2 resonators, 2 mufflers, 2 flex joints, etc since their are 2 seperate pipes.
