Stock speakers are 6x8's. Some manufacturers use a slightly different configuration labeled 5x7. Either will work, and you will have lots of options.

stock is 5x7, some makers sell 6x8s that usually same as 5x7s, but some sell real 6x8s (not sure who they are).

They are 6x8's or 5x7's....replace 'em with some good 6x8's. Pioneer's, Kenwood, Cerwin Vega. Rockford Fosgate...magnets are deep and if you are really creative, have a stereo shop fashion you some wood panels, or maybe sheetmetal panels that will accept 6 1/2 round speakers and get component set speakers. That is one of my next projects....sheeesh....now all I need is some cash to get this stuff done.

are sure all of those are 6x8s? i heard many manufactures call 5x7s 6x8s, and only some are true 6x8s... anyways, i'm satisfied with my pioneers, hard to beat for the money.

I have a Pioneer TS-P682 Component Speakers MSRP: $170.00
whose largest driver is a 5.25 midbass unit in the front. I have a Pioneer TS-A6895 6"x8" 2-Way Speaker MSRP: $155.00 whose largest driver is a 6X8 mid bass driver in the rear. When I play music with bass content thru these speakers I find that the midrange is better with the TS-P682 than with the TS-A6895. I find that the greater bass capability of the TS-A6895 is more of a problem because when the driver begins to reach its Xmax the midrange really sucks unlike the TS-P682 whose midrange is effected only slightly when its 5.25 driver approaches its XMax. I feel this is do to the size and shape of the driver. In the car audio domain 5.25 inch full range driver deliver better midrange performance than 6x8 inch drivers. Even the top speakers using 6x8 inch or 6.5 inch drivers have crossovers that address this problem by filtering out the bass because it is understood that a driver with high xmax flapping at or near its Xmax with ruin the midrange.

so in conclusion I have decided that two way full range car audio specific speakers using the 5.25 inch driver for midbass will give the best for midrange (though not midbass) in contours.

I had the Pioneer plates (TS-P682) in my truck. They did sound very good for drop-in 6x8s. If you were to add an external crossover (as opposed to only the cap on the tweet), they would sound much better especially in the mid-range and mid-bass areas.
