I am new to CEG but have had my '96 SE for a 2 years. I have developed an odd sensation in the brake pedal int he last 6 months. When i am braking normaly from highway speed, the car feels fine until it gets to the 40mph-20mph range in which the car shudders and vibrates. I can apply the brakes harder and make it stop, but that isn't solving the real problem. Any ideas?? Thanks guys.

Warped rotors will cause a pulsation in the pedal, if thats what you mean by a shudder then i'd look into either new rotors or turning your existing ones if possible. i personally replace my rotors over turning them but sometimes economics is a bigger issue. if that's not what you mean by a shudder, i'm not sure what it would be.

The whole car seems to pulsate(what i described as a shudder). I have tryed new rotors (Autozone I hate to say, I even turned .005" off the new ones to ensure they were true, as I unfortunately work at A-zone. college student)I am thinking I should get higher quality rotors, You guys seem to recomend Stazi, but I would like to finds a Cougar in a junkyard to get the caliper brackets for the front, so i can use SVT sized rotors. But the pulsation is pretty annoying, so maybe I will have to get normal sized rotors first. Could it also be a sagging drivers side motor mount, i am thinking about replacing it, as I have a different vibration on hard acceleration. Sorry about the long post. Jason

I had a vibration when I braked, and I also had (and still have) a vibration under acceleration. Both vibrations felt remarkably similar. I replaced the front rotors with standard quality units from O'Reilly's, and now the braking is extremely smooth. However, I still have the vibration when I accelerate, so I'm certain they were caused by two different things. Since your rotors are new, could you have an interaction with a tire, wheel, wheel bearing, driveaxle, etc? I'm also wondering if wheel alignment might play a role in this.

It could possibly be CV joints, or, if they're really bad, wheel bearings.

Cupped tires can also do this and can sometimes be difficult to pin down. Try rotating the tires and see if it makes a change. I had a Mustang in the shop about two weeks ago that needed tires to cure what for all the world seemed like warped rotors. The big clue was that it was not as consistant as warped rotors. We swapped tires from another car to prove what was wrong before the customer would buy new tires.
