I knwo I don't have a Contour, but since the Mondeo is very similar, I'm hoping someone can help.

My airbag light has been blinking over the last few days. It seems to blink 4 times, then a slightly longer pause, then 4 times again, and so on. Sometimes it starts blinking when I start the car, sometimes it doesn't blink at all on a journey, and sometimes it'll just start randomly.

I have pulled the airbag fuse and checked it, and it seems OK.

Thanks - looks like bad connectors. Now to figure out where they are...at least I have a Haynes manual.

mine was flashing 5 times then a pause then 3 times - code 53 - something was wrong with the sensors. except it would only do it every month or so, then all i had to do was shut off the car and wait 5 min then restart. i took to the dealer, and they couldn't find any problems - just yanked all the connections and reconnected them and tested all the crash sensors. everything came out OK and it hasn't gone off again since.

i'd leave airbag problems to the dealer - even though they are expensive, is it worth messing with if you need the airbags?

good luck!

I was pointed to the airbag codes on a thread on http://www.fordmondeo.org . It seems likely that I may have disturbed the seatbelt pre-tensioner wire under the driver's seat, so I'll check that out.

As for the airbag - frankly, I don't car if it works or not. The added benefit of an airbag over the seatbelt is pretty miniscule - and speak from some experience as far as seatbelted accidents go...

I have the same code lately. It is intermittent now but on a really cold day it will be back. I have to clean and tighten the RH crash sensor bracket.

Claymore-a 44 - RF Crash Sensor Not Mounted to Vehicle Properly

Normal Operation

Note:
Circuit 9 - MA29 (BN/BU) is attached to the side of the RH crash sensor case. In addition, the case is grounded to the vehicle.

The air bag diagnostic monitor measures the resistance between pin C20b - 20, circuit 9 - MA29 (BN/BU) and pin C20a - 3, circuit 91 - MA10 (BK/RD) (air bag diagnostic monitor reference ground). If the air bag diagnostic monitor measures a difference of more than 2.0 ohms between the ground at pin C20b - 20, circuit 9 - MA29 (BN/BU) and the ground at pin C20a - 3, circuit 91 - MA10 (BK/RD) it will flash diagnostic trouble code (DTC) 44.

Possible Causes

High resistance on air bag diagnostic monitor pin C20b - 20, circuit 9 - MA29 (BN/BU) to ground can be caused by:

1. A poor connection due to loose mounting, dirt, or corrosion at the RH crash sensor mounting location.

2. An open or damaged wire in circuit 9 - MA29 (BN/BU).

3. An open wire or loose circuit 9 - MA29 (BN/BU) wire attachment inside the RH crash sensor.

4. A poor reference ground at pins C20a - 3, circuit 91 - MA10 (BK/RD), and C20a - 5, circuit 91 - MA10A (BK/RD0, of the air bag diagnostic monitor.

Probably a dirty connection at the sensor. We had a recall in the US for this problem.

ssolomo- a 53 is:
Air Bag Diagnostic Monitor Fault

Normal Operation

The air bag diagnostic monitor performs several self - tests every time the ignition switch is turned ON. If any of these tests fail, the air bag diagnostic monitor will flash diagnostic trouble code (DTC) 53.

Possible Causes

1. Internal air bag diagnostic monitor self - test failure.

Probably corrected when they disconnected/reconnected harnesses.

Where are these sensors located? I've been getting 4-4 and 4-3 error codes (even after the recall). Don't feel like paying the stealership a few hundred to clean a dirty electrical plug.

TIA

Nevermind - I found the other thread that lists the specifics. Thanks.
