I have a 96 Contour SE and the selecter for the heater/air conditioning will only blow out of the defrost, no matter what the dial selector is on(floor, panel, etc.) Has anyone else had this problem?

It's a common problem.. A likely cause is a worn, loose, or cracked vacuum line, leading from the intake in the engine compartment to the heat controller in the dash. Another possibility is a small metal canister, just above the driver's foot, that controls the air distribution. A lever on this canister can sometimes come loose.

Hi All

Have the same recurring problem-

When I moved the selector I hear various sounds from under the dash but no change in airflow to different vents.

Took it into a dealership who had a mechanic who also owned a Mystique...he said that there was a "fix" in putting a star fitting (I don't quited know what he is refering to) on the control arm that moves the "door" tha changes the flow direction.

He did that and the fix lasted for about 6 months before it failed again. Now I get no sound from under the dash when I move the selector.....but at least it worked for a while longer.

OK kids....here is a probable cause.

Located under the dash, near the center console on the driver side by the pedals, is a vacuum motor that moves a lever that changes where the air vacates. What can happen is this lever pops off of the arm that moves the vents. Look under and in that location described above. Adjust the HVAC controls and see if you see the arm move. You should see the this silver cannister thing have an arm move in and out relative to the moving of the HVAC controls. You will probably notice nothing attached to it. This is your problem.

Near by will be a black arm. Find the selection where the silver cannister has its arm out the fullest. Pop the black arm's piece back into the hole on the vacuum motor and that should fix your problem. If you put it on and it comes back off, you may want to find a small ring clip that you can put on the end of the back arm.
