I have a friend who has a 98 Contour SE equipped with a 4 cylinder. He has a problem with the air bag warning light coming on at different times and staying on for awhile. It doesn't do it all the time and the dealership has checked everything out and can not find anything wrong. They have told him all the sensors are working correctly. Anyone have any ideas what this could be? Eurythmian

Get the code, or did the dealer tell him what it said? The sensors may be OK but the connectors could be dirty. They are very fussy, must be spotless. I powered down the system and opened them up. Cleaned with electronic parts cleaner and used Gold Ends (really hard to find) on them before plugging them back in. Light never flashed again. Front crash sensors have connections to the right and left of the radiator. One is under the battery. May take a little tugging on the wires attached to the sensor to fine them.

Thanks... I told my freind about this and he couldn't believe he had not thought of it before. He used to have a GMC truck that had a brake sensor that was this way. He have to clean off the connectors every few months or the brake light would come on. He's going to give this a try... Happy Holidays, Eurythmian

How do you power down the airbag system? I have a bad connection that sets off the light once or twice a month.

i think it's unhooking the battery for a while, maybe remove airbag fuses as well. they can only hold power for so long, so if you remove the battery cable for 30mins. i don't see how they couldn't be powered down.

please check with someone else to make sure, heck call your dealer and ask them, i don't think that would be too complicated for your dealer to answer (now mine on the other hand.....)

According to the Ford TSP (Technical Service Publication), it seems that you need to disconnect the battery for one minute to deplete the backup power supply of the air bag. Check out http://www.contour.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=trouble&Number=41664
