Hello, folks! I enjoy lurking your board. Many knowledgable people here. Wondering if anybody knows (God aside) why my car hasn't started for a week. Here's the specifics. TIA!

Patient:
1999 V6 MTX Cougar
return-type fuel delivery
50,000 mi

Symptoms:
Engine turns-over but does not "catch".

History:
Catalytic converter replaced 7/01 due to internal rattling.
Transmission replaced 7/01 due to "exploding".
Bad alternator bearing.
Bad HO2S11 sensor. "P1131 Lean Condition - Lack of Switching" CEL since 11/01.
Passed emissions 11/01.
[Purchased, by me 1/02. Am I a sucker or what?]
Failed emissions 1/02.
HO2S11 replaced 1/02.

Analysis:
Reaks of gas after attempting to start. [Pedal not pumped before/during start.]
Spark is delivered. [Friend got shocked holding the plug wire to the manifold while I attempted start.]
Fuel-pump is active/alive. [Heard hum of pump while attempting start.]

My wifes car almost didn't start the other day also. I stepped on the gas and it finally started. After holding the gas down a little when it was started it idled on its own. What I found using search here was it is probably the IAC (Idle Air Control). Has been starting fine since that incident so I haven't replaced that part yet.

admittedly, the search returns many things that may cause rough idling and stalling, but would sensor failure prevent the car from starting?

The IAC controls the air going in for idle so if it isn't opening then your car won't start since it isn't getting any air. That is why if you step on the gas it should start. That is if the IAC is the problem. You stated you haven't tried stepping on the gas. Just try it and see what happens.

Had the same thing happen to me and it was the timming belt slipped off, dont knwo how it go that way though. Would hurt to check.

Try cranking the engine while holding the throttle wide open. Holding the throttle full open while cranking shuts off the injectors. I'll bet you get it started. I don't know how it got flooded, but this happens ocassionally on Duratecs. In extreme cases the flooding washes out the rings and cylinder walls causing a loss of compression. It will usually recover from cranking with the throttle wide open. It will run rough for a bit while the excess fuel is burned off. In extreme cases where the engine cranks way fast from lack of compression you may need to pull the front spark plugs and add about a tablespoon of oil to the cylinders and reinstall the spark plugs then crank with the throttle wide open. The oil will restore compression long enough for the engine to fire up. It will settle down from rough running in a few moments. This was a real common problem on V8 Continentals when they were first intorduced in 95 and the 4.6 DOHC they use is a close relative to the Duratec.

V6 has chains, not a belt.
