Welp, I need new summer rubber this spring. The question is what rubber to buy?
I was really happy with my Yokohama AVS db's, but they wouldnt sqeel. I know, it's not a big deal, but darnet, sqeel is a cool-factor!
I'm just trying to decide if I should get the Yokohama AVS for ~$80/tire and deal with no squeel?
What summer rubber has everyoen been really happy with around here for the non-autocrosser-but-wants-to-someday kind of driver?
(BTW, Size is 225/50/15)

Not sure about the model you listed, but Yokohama also makes the RA1 which is used here in Eastern Canada by about 90% of all serious autocrossers. The RA1 is considered a true performance/race tire, and as such has a compund that is soft enough to tear away before squealing. You can always tell the difference between someone on race rubber and someone on street tires at an autocross. The street rubber is loud and embarrasing (much like my spelling - sorry). Perhaps the model you listed is oriented more toward performance than longevity. I run bald RA1 on 15x6.5 Escort GT rims for dry race days, and am picking up new 17" for my daily driver rims. When the dailies are worn down, they'll become the race rubber, by which time, the 15s will be ready for new rubber. Just keep alternating Best of luck. Remember - its always better to be fast than loud.

Very true. Here's exactly what I was looking at: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Yokohama&tireModel=AVS+ES100&vehicleSearch=false&partnum=25VR5ES100Now I know jack crap about tires, but what I do know is I want something at LEAST V-speed rated, and it's got to work with my budget. What has me worried, is out of 8 tires that come up in the search results for summer, 225/50/15, v-rated or higher tires, these are only $80/tire. Next is the Dunlop SP8000 for $96/tire, then everything else is at least $130. So what gives? Is it a really crappy tire? I know I loved my old Yokohama's, so I dont' want to think they're crappy.... But $80/tire has me sold for the time being as long is it isn't a pile of steamy poo

Yokohama is a great manufacturer IMHO, and I suspect that they make a race tire. Up here, though, we are in on a group buy that will see me getting 225/50/15 RA1s for about $170 CDN. Thats only 106US. So, you should at least be able to find the RA1 for that price in your neck of the woods. I don't want to lead you astray, however. The RA1 will wear faster than most street tires, so be prepared. Truly, though, I have been really pleased with mine getting two full seasons on the road and track before they were no longer street legal (insert "Perfect" for the track).

I'm currently running these on the SVT and couldn't be happier...they compare quite favorably with the BFG KDW's that came stock. 3litreman hit the nail on the head...hard rubber, higher milage tires are going to make more noise than performance rated rubber! The ES 100's are a great deal!! Regards, Art

Im running the avs es 100's currently, there a great summer tire but dont bother to try driving in the snow, there practically slicks. before i had the avs intermediate wich i think they stopped making, the es100's feel like they have a bit stiffer side wall giving good steering response and they seem to grip better. IMO worth the money!

the AVS db's are designed to reduce road noise - i have them too... why would you want to reduce a $150 tire to dust?!?! if you have a problem with having too much money, i can help but seriously, i think it's the tire design... the dual groove channels and the overall track doesn't really give the same pattern for a good "sqeally" tire

For that much money, get a better tire. Firestone Firehawk SZ50 EP's are the top rated summer Ultra High Performance tire.

labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?
