i haven't noticed this since the last time it rained, but it seems that when it's raining outside - my speedo will "zero" out and quit working - but after a minute or so, it will jump back up to speed... the "gas" light turns on for 2-3 seconds when it comes back to "life"... i can't replicate the problem unless it's raining outside. what could this be?

I had the same problems once, only it happened over bumps. My speedo would go out.
It was fixed under warranty. I think something was loose. I forget what happened exactly. Had it fixed at the same time my PATS stopped me from starting my car.

Had the same thing happen a long time ago. Never figured out what it was, it just went away.

I do not remember but it might be the VSS. father had this happen after he got his car, he said he spraid something with silicone spray and it took care of it, in 96, but it just happened again. I beleive it was someplace on the transmission so that is why I think it was the VSS

vehicle speed sensor I am pretty sure reports the speed of the vehicle to the PCM and the speedometer, it also is used with cruise control
basically it takes the place of a speedometer cable that older cars have, but it also reports important information to the computer and some other systems

The PCM gets it's signal from the ABS wheel speed sensors. (actually probably from both, but it definitely uses the wheel sensors for calculations) The latter two do get their signal from the VSS.
