I was stuck behind some moron on the NJ Turnpike doing about 55. He started to move over finally and I punched it. The tranny kicked down to 2nd gear and the revs jumped as usual, then I had to back off because he fainted back into the left lane, then quickly back into the right. I got back in it again. My revs were still high due to throttle hang and when I got back on the gas it felt like the car was in neutral the revs skyrocketed sans forward motion. I let off and slowly back on and everything seemed fine. Any thoughts??

Have you checked the fluid level lately and has it ever been changed?

I have found that when there are sudden extreme changes of the throttle, the trans gets confused. In 1st or 2nd, a suddenly dropping the throttle at high revs will induce a hard shift that will make you think the trans is trying to drop out of the car. I have had the same thing happen with the same conditions as you have rapid on-off-on=false neutral. After you let off for a couple of seconds, the trans figures things out, decides on a gear, and away you go. I bought my SE with 63K on it, it now has 96K, and it has done the above since I got it. I have just got in the habit of never letting off suddenly in the lower gears.

I agree. It has happened to me a few times too.

happens in 1st to 2nd shift, also in the habit, probably makes people think i'm a bad driver sometimes when i should be slowing down sooner. the false neutral thing sorta freaked me out though when it happened...... i wonder if my chip has changed any of these things.
