I know this site is for Contours, but since the Contour and Cougar are on the same platform, maybe someone would have some insight. The hatch on my fiancee's Cougar pops open by itself. Strangest thing. Just purchased used with 36000 mi on Wednesday. Does anyone have any thoughts?

check the latch on it, most likely not engaging.

When you shut the hatch, it seems to engage. It won't open at that point, it is when you get in the car and try to put it in gear, or say after you pull out of the drive, all of a sudden, pop! and it is loose. Could a faulty latch do that?

does it have a remote latch? is it electric? if not electric, i can't see it opening because of shifting (rather, because of movement maybe). visually inspect the latch, push something into it (pen, small piece of metal,etc.) and try to pull it back out.

someone else will have to jump in if it has an electrical problem. still recommend checking the latch.
