I have a '98 SVT Contour with 58k miles. My CEL has been coming on for the past several months. There are NO drivability issues and when I clear the code by disconnecting the battery, the CEL doesn't come back on for 2-3 weeks.
BTW, during one of these 2-3 week periods, my car passed state emissions.
I had the code scanned at Autozone and the two codes were,
P430 and P420...with the message "Cats below threshold".
Any ideas? And why would the CEL stay off for a while when the codes are cleared?
Thanks guys.

I ran into a similar problem only my code was 460. I too also passed somg and my CEL never came on during it so that was good. My problem is that one of my Pre-Cats is busted.....but i don;t think thats it...if it were i'd notice a back up or unsmooth air flow...it seems to work fine....im thinknig of replaceing my O2 sensors and see if that fixes the problems( i can get them really cheap because i work for a parts wholeseller). Im also thinking of adding Sp Motorspots O2 enahncers wich are just wire harnest that attach to the o2 sensors that prevent false readings by changing the voltage ( good for custom exhaust)
The O2 enhancers might work for you. Ther 64 dollars at SP Motorsports for one pair ( and there is 4 on a v6) if your having no problems with passing smog this should cure you...but if you barly passed smog, I would not get them just yet...you could very well have a bad CAT, and that can get worse with time.

P0420=Bank 1 catalyst system efficiency is below the acceptable threshold P0430=Bank 2 catalyst system efficiency is below the acceptable threshold There are many posts that deal with these codes, here is one of them: http://www.contour.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=trouble&Number=53534If you use the search feature, you will find a LOT more.

I had identical problem
I installed 1 downstream CAT O2 sensor [ bankk 1] and CEL light has been off for 3 weeks

How did you figure out which o2 sensor? And if you cleared your codes, did your CEL stay off for a while like mine did?

The CEL for 420 or 430 require THREE cycles of your engine [1 cycle = ~20 miles of computer required driving]to activate the CEL light [pulling fuses or disconnect battery does the same thing immediately]. This also works in reverse [3 good cycles of no bad O2 inputs the CEL goes out]
Buy at least one downstream O2 sensor and check codes after resetting CEL [Autozone]
