Ok, so FluiDSVT and I have been working on a new project for our Duratec motors and here are the first few pics.

Not being real happy with the way heat affects our open intakes, but wanting to keep them since they sound so nice (and make more HP!) we devised a heatshield made of sheet aluminum. We figured out that one of the main heat source was from the radiator fans kicking on and flooding the bay with hot air. The shield was designed to block all air from below, the side, and the front. After testing several different designs for both fit and effectiveness, this was the result. Cool air is allowed to enter from the factory draw and the unit seals to the hood with heavy duty weatherstriping.

It should fit all brands of MAF adaptors.

Both Chad and I have been driving around w/the unit in place for a while and we have noticed that the filter stays cool to the touch at all times - even when the radiator fans turn on in traffic. We both noticed that during driving we feel that the "punch" that cool days bring to the Duratec is still there after sitting in traffic.

We are getting ready to produce these things very soon. What do you guys think? Remember, these are prototypes and the finish and hardware will be better in production units.

Here are the pics:

First off, let me say that I love it! Nice and simple. And we all know that simple is always better. Great work! I am hoping that sometime after X-mas I can replace my stock box with a CAI and this shield looks and very possibly functions way better than anything else on the market, as for heat sheilds. I would love to get one after I get the CAI installed.

Second, although I know that this was probably not the intention of the project - but this really does open up the possiblities of some form of ram air induction for the duratec's and the ztec's. Possibly through the use of a air tube that could be mounted to a small scoop located on the hood.

On that note, what's the probablity of creating a shield similiar to this that could be mounted directly on top of the Z's throttle body? I don't have a Ztec, but the thought crossed my mind after looking at the unit for awhile.

All and all I fill that as it is, it is a great idea and product. Most of all though, I fill the product has a lot of potential in growth in several areas. All the attributes needed for a successful product.

Cheers! I will watch this one closely!

Mine looks exactly like that! Intelligent people think alike. I also build em for all my friends. I just finished one for a 01 Jeep Cherokee. after I did it he insulated it with some kind of thermal wrap. I'll post pics of mine when I get a web page to use.

It's Metal! I have a big problem with that!

Why build a convection oven for your air filter. Use something that does not absorb & transfer heat so efficiently.
I wouldn't be surprised if it actually increased heat soak at low speeds. At any speed without a cold air draw from the front.

How about some independant temperature reading tests.
