Anyone have any info/opinions on k&n vs kkm regarding filtration quality and performance gains? I am more concerned with protecting the engine, but added performance is always good.

I'm a bit torn.

I have the KKM with an AFE filter, I switch to this setup in the winters. Heatsoak KILLED me during the summers, just was losing too much power and consequently, killed my water pump (was due for replacing) after I got my DMD installed because the engine bay was a lot toastier with me keep those smooth rev's at 5k+ all the time. With I did notice: the AFE filter was BROILING all the time, even in the winter, the engine bay is just hot.

What I use in the summers here in Houston is a KN drop in. I've had it, so I never bought an AFE drop in, I don't know if there is a difference in performance between the two, it's just that AFE filters are better at filtering and you could justify longer intervals between oil changes. BUT, today, I actually switched back to the stock KN filter with the stock cover assembly. Let me tell you, there just is a difference.

The open filter is phenomenal, but the heat soak screws you, and I "feel" (hence my subjective opinion from driving around) that the heat soak actually minimizes if not takes away from any hp you'd possibly get. 1314, another CEG'er in the Houston area, dyno'ed and showed a LOSS in power with the open AFE filter. SO, in my humble opinion, if you live up north and temp's don't get BEYOND 40F, open filter WILL HELP TREMENDOUSLY.
If you have temp's anywhere beyond 50F, heatsoak will negate the effects, and I would then recommend an AFE drop-in alternative.

50 degrees F? We aren't in the artic here! Anywho, you basically then wouldn't recomend an open air filter to any outdoor temps above 50 degrees F?

make a good heatshield...run some hose from the front bumper to the filter and it will be fine, even in the hot summer. If you are really that worried, get a functional hood scoop that goes directly into the intake. You could relocate your battery to the trunk if you wanted as well, that would create a little less heat and more room to breathe.

I love the sound and results of my KKM, I would reccomend it highly. It sounds amazing and I have had no problems thus far, I guess I should give it time though, see how this baby holds up in Florida summers.

speaking of heat shields, this is a very good point. does anyone know how to make one? do you use fiberglass? Can you buy it online? I am putting in K&N RU-1785 in my car using a BAT MAF adapter. I would like a heat shield to put in my car. and the tubing for cold air? any suggestions on that?

go to menards/home depot/ lowes and buy a rubbermaid mailbox for 5 bucks. Then cut it to fit. Cheap, easy to make heatshield.

I have a Miks Heatshield, the best in the industry, still didn't help. . .

I'm moving the battery, maybe that'll help. . .the filter just gets too hot, a scoop and a hose would DEFINTLEY cool the whole area down, draw some cold air, then the performance gains would be awesome. . .but then you run the risk in wet weather of destroying your engine. . .it's a compromise, it always is. . .
