I was wondering if anyone has done this? I am swapping engine and trans right now. I was wondering if I could switch to a post 98 trans and use the short throw shifter?

long as your 97 does not have rod shift, which it doesn't, it should work.

I have a rod shifter. I can't remove that and use the cable from the post 98?

you can change to cable shift, Contact Micah, he's done it IIRC.
EDIT: And i'm sorry it was a brain fart on my part saying the car doesn't have rod shift!

Call Terry, he did it to my sister's car (96SE), which now has a 2000 cougar engine and transmission. There are more issues than one would think. Converting from rod to cable shift, moving brake lines, engine mounts, cutting holes in the floor, removing dollars from your wallet, etc.
But, joking aside it has made one AMAZING car. The build quality and toys of a 96, with the power and smoothness of a 2000 (+) DMD and Quaife.

If I had a choice, I would switch back to a pre-98 MTX instead of the other way around. More durable, no worries about snapping a cable, and more feel for what the tranny is doing.
Just my $.02
