Anyone have some tips for the crankshaft pulley removal? I'm replacing the timing belt and currently have the cams locked for alignment...do I really have to take off the starter to get the pulley off? Thanks!

are you a ATX or a MTX...
I assume your a ATX since you mentioned the starter removal..
and no you don't have to remove it hector and I got his ff without removing the starter.
BTW air tools would come in really handy for this

The car has the auto trans. Here's where I'm at on this darn project. I have the serpentine belt off, the valve cover off, and I have the cams locked with a flat bar at TDC.I can't get the crankshaft pully off, the Haynes manual says take the starter off and wedge a screwdriver in the gears. Since I didn't want to take the time to take off the starter, I tried just loosening thecrankshaft pully using the resistance from the flat bar locked in the cams, that was a mistake, I must have stripped out some keys in the gears that turn the cam shaft. Fortunately, I did mark the cams and crankshaft pully posistion with a marker prior to this stunt, so with a little luck I should be able to get everything aligned again eventually. But back to the real issue, any tips on getting the pully off? Thanks!

there is a nice little mark on the crank pully and on your block for the position... which the haynes manual mentions for the crank: see the picture below

the white line on the pulley is where the mark is on the block to line up the bottom end. you will see a raised line on the block showing you where it is.

any particular reason you are changing the crank shaft pulley? was your old one old, worn or is it just a mod to improve performance?

Jesus. You're damn lucky that those gears turned, because if they had stayed locked you might well have cracked the metal of the camshaft. There are good reasons why the manuals urge you very strongly not to use that alignment slot to hold the cams still while wrenching at the other end.
