Sounds like it could be. It may also be your clutch not disengaging all the way.
Every once in a while I can't get into first using slight pressure. So I will do like you said and go to another gear, after that it's fine. When I go into reverse I always go fourth then reverse. I have never had a problem with that.
Never ever force a gear into place. That could be the quickest way to a tranny rebuild.
