Having looked under the hood at the space available, I was wondering is it possible to change the left side headlight bulbs, without first having to remove the battery? I suppose if I had a service manual, the answer might be more obvious.

Wilkommen aus dem CEG!!
In all seriousness, Welcome to contour.org, the absolute be-all end-all Ford Contour enthusiast site. Please be sure to browse around and find all that the site has to offer.

In regs to your headlamp conundrum, my suggestion is to get a torx socket or a large flat blade screwdriver and remove the headlight assembly. There are (i think) 3 plastic screws that hold the assembly in place, and you may have to take the left side of the grill off (another screw, and a clip). You will not mess up the aiming of your headlamps in doing so, so do not worry.
The whole process should take about 10 minutes, and it's a lot easier than removing the battery.

Also, what kind of contour/mystique do you have??
Engine?
Tranny?
Year etc..
again, Welcome!!

no center ring disassembly necessary...just remove the screws holding in the ligh assembly, and slide the assembly foreward...piece of cake...

Take out the 2 screws on top, and on lower center behind the headlight and you're good to go. It's a lot faster, and no scraped knuckles.
