I have read about the problems with some of the water pumps having the plastic impellers. My contour is a '99, did Ford solve their water pump problems by then? If mine has almost 50,000 miles on it should I just replace the old pump with a new one? Does someone make a better pump? I don't want to wait for a failure and then buy a new motor.

Welcome to CEG
The water pump problem is with the V6's. I believe Napa sells the one with the metal impeller if your going to change it.

On the V6, check the belt tensioner if you replace the waterpump, if it is rusted tight, it might lead to early pump failure.
