From everything I've read out ATXs use Mercon/Dexron III ATF. From what I've been able to find it appears that Ford doesn't recommend Mercon V for out trans. OK. Most oil companies that make Mercon V say it's applicable wherever Mercon V and Mercon are called for. ?
Can I use either one? Is there an advantage to the extra friction modifiers of the V (I know the extended temp range is better)?

Mercon V is essuently Mercon with with a semi synthetic blend. Although Ford has not recommended retrofitting it backward to cars that specified regular Mercon, the people who make it says it can be. I would not be afraid of it.

Thank you Jim. That's what I thought.
You have no idea how great it is to find a board where there are people who really know "stuff".
