I know these are probably asked all the time, but I am still getting used to my Contour.. so I am a newby, I guess... If ANYONE can provide me some insight, it would be greatly appreciated!

1. My CEL is on, and was told that it was the rear downstream O2 sensor, I replaced that (but the plug from the NAPA part was not exactly the same..) light has not gone off... now getting a rotten eggs smell. Can this still be from O2 sensors.. or am i definately dealing with a bad Cat??
2. Will the cat throw a check engine light?
3. Which should I change first??
4. How much am I looking at.. parts and labor, for the cat replacement?
5. Is there a process to reset the light to see if replacing the sensors does anything?

Sorry about all the questions, but I am new.

I am considering changing both sensors, then having dealer do Cat... any advice is welcome.

Thanks.

Make sure you are doing the right sensor - bank #2 is actually the front of the engine bay, bank #1 is the side closest to the passenger compartment. Whoever gave you the code should have mentioned which bank the code came from.

Do you have the actual code? P#### format

Not having the same connector doesn't sound right to me. Are you absolutley sure you have the correct sensor?

You should reset the PCM (pull fuses #4 and 11 or neg battery cable) to clear the code. Especially if it is the rear O2 sensor - the Cat Monitor test runs VERY infrequently and the CEL won't go of until it does (and passes).

Cat replacement is big $$$ - you are replacing the exhaust manifold. Not cheap, and not a small job labor wise.

There is a recall on the cats http://www.alldata.com/TSB/19/971941C8.html
you should call a dealer and see if your car has had it done or make a post in here asking for an oasis report.

Do dealers have record to show which recall had been done on my car ?I mean there is no hurt to replace the cats once in awhile.
