my car started to overheat yesterday. i put i a new thermostat today and it still continued to overheat. i thought it was the thermostat because i had no heat nd it still doesn't. any idea's?

water pump?

I think you are right. No heat, and the motor is running hot. Classic symptoms. And I dont even own a V6

but the water pump isn't making any noise. it is quiet.

I don't own a Duratec, but I did manage to destroy one while I was test-driving it from a car lot. It was a 96 SE Duratec. The water pump went out, while I was testing it. It made no noise at all; it only got hot, hot, hot. Needless to say, I didn't buy that one.

I can almost guarentee that this is your problem. If you have not heat, that means that the water isn't circulating or you would. The water pump doesn't have to make any noise as long as the bearing doesn't go bad. (I am assuming it has one somewhere.) The impeller is plastic and it just rips apart and the pump freewheels but only the shaft (or whatever you call it) inside is spinning and isn't contacting anything so you wouldn't hear anything. Have that checked or replace it and that should fix your problem, I hope you didn't let it get too hot. Good luck.

agreed. replace the waterpump with a metal impellar pump and you should be fine.
