Christ, took me a damn hour. I had to remove the entire license plate surround on the trunklid and the morons at Ford designed this lame-azz screw/bolt that is press fit. To anyone who does not have rusted bolts, replace them with stainless or plastic ASAP!

Yeah I tried to drill it out, but the damn things are press fit so it is a major *****. Damn Ford.

A MUST HAVE is a jar of antiseize compound. I put some on my rear screws when it took me OVER an hour to change the freaking things. Best money I spent, now they come out a lot easier.
Also good to put on caliper bolts as well.

Contourguy, you must be getting new IL plates. Too bad the old ones are probably seven years old!

I removed the rusted hex head screws and had one bolt break in my old car's frame. I got new stainless screws and I had to use the bottom holes, which were not used.

I read about this problem here before... I take mine out every 6 months and spray the threads with a lubricant. Mine haven't stuck yet

I just took a wrecking bar to mine. Pulled them right out. Then, I tapped the plastic and put in a stainless bolt. Wifey was not happy, but she'll live. smile

I sympathize with you all. I tried vice grips, a grinding wheel, WD-40...All no use. I finally resigned myself to buying a new back reflector, well, until I found out that it is $280 from Ford. Ford does recognize the problem, and have a solution for those who have let the rust monster win the battle. It is a strip of PVC plastic with anchor holes set into it. The surgical procedure involves using a 5/8ths boring blade on your drill and removing the offending rusted anchors entirely. The new piece has double stick tape, and adheres to the inside to the relector piece. The new screws are wood/sheet metal looking things, and sink into plastic, so rust will no longer be an issue. Note that the part will only fix two of your four mounts for the plate, so two of these baddies may be necessary. Price was $10-15, iirc. If interested, I will dig up the part number.
