My wife's 96 gl has always had a low idle
when setting at light with ac on it almost
shakes car apart. It has a zetec i4.
Any ideas?

Clean the MAF sensor wires with a shot of carb cleaner followed by a shot of brake cleaner to eliminate all petroleum residue. 5 minute fix, works like magic.

Becuase the MAF elements get dirty and the engine doesn't get a real read on the air it's taking in so it doesn't deliver the correct amount of fuel. The MAF may or may not play a direct role in idle speed but the information the computer takes from it at other times does.

I suspect that the Idle Air Control valve is stuck or sticking. Try cleaning it.
