I own a 96 Merc. Mystique 4cyl. When I apply the brake I have a moderate shaking that I have never noticed before. I don't think the tires need balancing or the wheels aligned. What other parts could cause a shimmy only while braking?

Thanks for the thought... but i had all of my brakes replaced, (pads&disks) less than two months ago. Other thoughts?

You don't say if it has just started shaking or if it's been around for a while?
Check for anything jammed between disc(rotor) and the hub. A tiny bit of dirt could throw the disc out of true.

The problem has just started in the past two weeks. I gave the brakes a "look over" and felt everything to make sure it was proper. Other thoughts? Thanks for the replies.

unfortunatly rotors do come out of the box warped or can become warped enough to cause a shimmy quickly if they are not broken in correctly...if its only when you apply the brakes that the shimmy occurs it has to be linked to the brakes or hub assy somehow...apply the brakes at about 60 and you'll get enough of a pulsation to tell you its the brakes

oh yeah sorry...i just remembered seeing a front end shake with a bad outer tie rod...it was really bad at the time so it should be easy to diagnose...it happened while applying the brakes

I get the same thing and mine is caused by shot bushing in the front A Arms. Only shakes when braking hard at speed or when coming to a stop.

Actually I get the same thing under heavy braking.

Do I see a trend here?

Is it possible that the Ford hubs could constantly cause rotor warpage everytime you put new ones on? My dealer changed the pads and rotors when I bought the car. 7000 miles later they started warping. I changed the rotors myself with new ones, and 7000 miles later they started warping...I see a Ford trend here...
