I'm in the process of changing the O2 sensor on my 95 v6. I have a 7/8 O2 sensor socket and a stubby 7/8 wrench. What's the easiest way to break the sensor loose? I've removed the coil and tried from the top of the motor and jacked the car up and tried from underneath the car. There's no room to get any leverage from the top or the bottom. Do you have to remove more than the coil to get at it from the top. There are just so many hoses and a/c lines this just seems near impossible. Anybody that has actually changed this sensor that could give me help I would appreciate it. I'm ready to use a chain saw to get at it. Please help!

I replaced mine a few weeks ago. Huge difference in gas mileage and driveability!
I removed the coil pack and used a crow foot wrench + 2 extensions and a swiveling joint that could change the angle. I guess your O2 sensor wrench would be equivalent to the crow foot.
I attached the crow foot to one extension and then followed the wire down until I got the wrench onto the sensor securely. Then I attached the swivel and the other extension and loosened the sensor. It came off very easily once loose.
Be careful not to drop your wrench because it will fall into a place that is very hard to get at from beneath the car!!!
The tough part was getting the new one back on. It must be at exactly the correct angle. And it is just far enough down for me to only reach it with my finger tips.
After about an hour, I tried using rubber gloves. This gave me the grip to get the sensor properly into the manifold and turn it clockwise to get it started.
After that, I connected the wrench again and tightened it to 26 ft-lbs, which is the torque specified in my service manual.

My mileage went up a bit too, best guess would be 3 mpg. That job is for someone with skinny arms and hands and long fingers. I looked like I broke up a cat fight after doing mine.

rvoth, did you have a check engine light? or just routine replacement? i have gotten CELs every couple of months for the sensors and will do them soon. what does 26 ft lbs equal in hand tightening terms?

maybe i'm weak cause I couldn't break loose the one right after the first manifold! The easiest one to get to!! I need to replace the one near the radiator myself....man do i feel weak now.

Yo my man, if you are still trying the O2 sensor swap, place a wrench on the sensor with the end pointing up at about 1-2o'clock. Slip a piece of pipe(gal. but PVC should do) 1.5-2.0" dia. and 3' in length over the wrench, from above, and pull towards the driver's side, sensor should come loose easily and you can take it out from below with some difficulty and cool profanity. Install the new one from below. Good luck, god speed, and have lots of spirits nearby.

My mileage is up by a good 15% or 20%. Exactly as it was when it was new. (I now have 220,000 km). Make sure your air cleaner element is good and clean. Make sure your EGR is working properly. Put a vacuum to the EGR valve and it should cause the engine to stumble or stall at idle. If it doesn't, then you need to clean the EGR passages behind your throttle plate. Make sure your plugs are worn evenly, properly gapped (0.054") and a nice brown color. If not, then replace them. I did this with Autolites and then Motorcraft double platinums and got a terrible misfire. The solution was copper plugs from Champion. Not recommended, but they work great for me. (Someone else who had this problem has had success with NGK platinums). Other than that, I don't know. Maybe you should try racing less - Randall
