For about the last week or so my 95 GL has been making a grinding noise from the rear end which I thought was because it needed new pads. I pulled the tires off and inspected the pads. They are warn about 50%. Now I am stuck on what would be making this grinding noise. It seems to do it more when I first drive the car, and goes away within a few minutes. Could it be a caliper piston sticking on me and how would I check for that? The car has 107k on it. I bought it with 74k so I'm not sure what has been done to the brakes. Any info would be great. Thanks

Is it a steady grinding noise? Does it increase with speed? Is it worse on turns? Did you hit anything shortly before it began? Do the brakes seem to work fine or pull to one side or the other to an extreme degree. Does it make a grinding noise if you bounce the backend while stationary?

I had a 95 GT Mustang. I had to re-place the caliper on the back driver side it was bad. It made a howling noise. You say the brakes are half worn? I could be that the brakes are glazed over and are not making the contact it needs with the rotor. Have you tries new brakes and if so do they still do the same?
