We crashed my friends 87 Nova into a guard rail and left it there. The next day he reported it stolen and we decided to tell him the truth laugh

I can't believe no one mentioned how in the movie how the charger changed from a 69 to a 70 charger. The 1970 model did not come with a chrome ring around the grill. My uncle told me this since he had one. I think the 69 model was more rare. Maybe thats the explanation behind why they didn't use it in the flip scene.

When I had my 87 GN I was at the drag strip and this guy drove in with another GN, an 86 and ripped off an 11.7 pass, then popped the trunk, took out a pair of slicks and ran a 10.8 and then drove it home. No kidding, these are the greatest muscle cars ever, bar none IMO laugh NO trailer either, incase you didn't catch that when I said the guy "drove in". Remember these cars came from the factory with 3.42 gears and I'll tell you in the 5 seasons I had my GN, rarely did I ever hear anyone running more than a 3.90 gear, and that was only because the guy was running a 29x11x15 slick or close wink Sorry about the rambling but sometimes I miss my car and I'm very passionate about them smile One more story to "wet your whistle", when I was in the GSCA there was a guy with an 89 TTA (Turbo Trans Am) that drove 125 miles to the track and laid down a 9.99@ 134 mph, more proof that you don't need a V-8 to go fast AND be able to drive it everywhere cool

Wait are you saying supra's aren't capable of running 9s or THAT supra wasn't capable? If you were saying all supras I have a video of a supra running a 9.8 IIRC. I have another one of a Z06 running a 9.9 with a bogged launch... I can post 'em on myfamily.com if you want.

Also, someone said something about the charger w/viper engine conversion, this was posted the other day, but here is the link to the popular hot rodding article.

With enough cash, you could get your mom's station wagon to run 9's.

I owned a '68 Charger that had a very built 440 Magnum, 4-speed, and 4.11 gears. The car dynoed at about 460hp to the rear wheels (458 IIRC). The car was all-steel, and the best run I ever had (on slicks) was 11.84. Now, I spent a considerable amount of $$ on the suspension to get it to hook up, and it still had traction problems, but given that time with an NA, single 4bbl motor with only 11:1 compression, you could very well get a stock bodied Charger into the 9's if you had the $$.

Being a Corvette guy (as well as a Contour guy) I have to represent in this discussion. In speaking of old muscle cars, let us not forget the almighty '67 L88 Corvette. This was a Showroom dealer car. 12 seconds @ 113mph in the quater mile...off the dealer showroom floor...on 7" wheels!

427cubes under the hood. The car was rated at 430+hp by the factory (because they wouldn't have sold as many if they actually put the real hp rating of 560!!!) This car was also well known for de-throning Shelby's 427 Cobra.

And hell, in terms of top speed, you can't ignore the Dodge Superbird Hemi. You've all probably seen it. Looks like the General Lee with a pointed nose cone and 36" tall spoiler on the back, vents over the front wheel wells. Off the showroom floor, the top speed was 200mph!!! That's not a typo... As far as I'm aware, and I'm not a Dodge guy, trying to find an ORIGINAL Superbird will set you back a cool million.

I love my Contour to death, but my 'vette is still my #1 baby.
There's money to be made in racing. I should know. I put a lot of it there.
You can make a small fortune in racing. Start with a large one.

Okay, well the Dodge Daytona and Plymouth Superbird were low volume, special built cars in order to qualify them for NASCAR competition. They are rare but not necessarily million dollar machines. A nice low mileage one might set you back 175K - 200K dollars but most "drivers" can be had for less than $100K. Still a lot of money, for sure. And while the race car versions cruised near 200mph on closed course race tracks, the street versions, shod with relatively skinny polyglass tires and depending on gearing, would probably hit 150 - 160mph. Not all came with the 426 hemi. There were 440/4v and 440/6v versions as well. Good old Detroit iron is hard to beat for speed. laugh

Large heavy cars tend to have higher top speeds. If two cars have the same 0-60 times and are of similar shape, the lighter one will have more drag limitation on the top speed.
