This is my problem, the trunk on my 1998 Contour will not open with the lever inside, but it does work with the remote and key. I messed around with the orange nob thing on the trunk lock and in all positions it still will not work. Any ideas? Please help if you can. Thanks.

When you pull on the lever inside the car is it very loose, does it pull back down on it's own?
You may have a bad or broken cable. Have a friend pull the lever while you look at the lock, do any parts move?
For some reason the Tour is full of cables...(throttle, door locks, trunk, fuel door) It's a forest of cables!
Needless to say, if it's broken a salvage yard will have a replacement, but I have no idea how to change that one, the routing might be "fun"...

It could be that the trunk doesn't "pop" up, I ahd that on my 97. I had to pull lever, and lift up, if it was icy, trucnk only opend with the key. There is a small spring that can be added to make it pop up.

Check the Valet lock leaver in the trunk, it's right below the lock mech.
My friend has a 98 and had the same problem when he got it.

I have that same problem on my '98! I've been looking for something to fix it. Can you give more details on this "spring"?

Remove plastic
Loosen latch [2 torx]
Push down ~1/4 inch and tighten[trial and error]
Mine now works !!!!
