I was looking through the archives and found only one mention of this. On a 95 COntour SE w/ 2.5 L and MTX recently has had the engine light come on while running down the highway. The mileage is around 70,000 when this started to happen. Often it is when climbing a slight grade. I have a feeling it is a stuck fuel injector. The light doesn't come on as much after stepping up to 89 for fuel and have the injectors cleaned by Ford. Anyone have any ideas?

Mine was doing that...dealer looked at it while it was in for a recall repair and found that a hose had split and was sucking in fresh air. I'll try to remember to find the service report and let you know for sure, but I want to say it was a hose for either PCV or EGR, and it was something that (allegedly) ran a good ways around the engine. I got nicked $180 or so for repairing it.

thanks for the reply, I am from Monroe, that is a bit of a drive from Winstead but I will keep that in mind.
My other thought my father had on the CEL was it had something to do with the exhaust gas recirculation system( is that what EGR is?) also the light would turn on then off then back on again, it seemed to cycle

I had a problem with my '98 tour with the CEL coming on on the Highway as well. I had Ford look at it and they said was an o2 sensor, they said that the next 3 times after that then the mechanic ordered a new computer and the new comp started to report a small $15 part (can't remember the name) but what tipped the mechanic off was the the forward bank of cylinders had nice normal brown covered spark plugs but the rear bank was black excrusted (running rich) so if you don't have a code reader or if it tells you that it is an o2 sensor then check the plugs as well.
This may have nothing to do with your problem but I always like to share different possibilities.
