Looking at the poll, there are a lot of tour's with very high wattage systems. My question is how much wattage can I run safely without blowing up my electrical system, draining my battery every time I turn the car off, dimming my lights everytime the 808 bass hits and things along those lines. Thankx for any help you can give me.

I know of VW GTIs with 4000w on a stock electrical system. (power/ground wires were upgraded) He has no dimming issues on a 95 amp alternator.

It really depends on your current draw from your amps, versus the output of your alternator. Stock alternators on a V6 contour are rated at 130 amps. If your constant current draw exceeds that, you'll be slowly draining the battery. Incidentally, even though the alternator is rated for 130 amps, it isn't necessarily putting that out, depending on rpms, especially at idle.

My car, for example, has 3 amplifiers, with a combined total current draw of 120 amps. if I'm cranking the system so it is continuously drawing that kind of power and the car is only idling, My battery is in for a workout. Even worse if I'm running wipers, rear defrost, headlights, etc... While cruising, though, I have no problems while it is at higher RPM's.

If you plan on running a large system with the engine off for extended periods of time, you'll want to consider having a deep cycle battery for those occasions.

If you would like to talk to him and challenge his claim, go talk to Rob Minichino (Rob M) at www.carsound.com. He would be glad to give you details on his system. BTW, you are partially correct, most multithousand watt systems will rarely use more than a fraction of that amound for music. Playing test tones may be a different story, but playing music with a high quality thousand watt amp will rarely use more than 100w aside from the occasional transient.

You aren't off to a good start so far. You have come across as arrogant in most of your posts, but have followed it up with one misconception after another. Dont worry, you aren't the only one. 90 percent of the car audio population has the same beliefs as you about amplifiers, power handling, electrical systems, etc. I just do my part to try to quelm those misconceptions when I get an opportunity. You are obviously familiar with car audio, and in general have good tastes, so don't think I am picking on you. I just try to stop the false info whenever I can.

If you're drawing to much current they will but sometimes you can just add a cap and it'll fix the dimming problem.

Caps don't do squat.

I'm confused... Who was this statement intended for?
