HI THERE

PEOPLE ARE TELLING ME I SHOULD CHANGE MY WATER PUMP BECAUSE I HAVEN'T DONE SO SINCE THE CAR WAS BORN. NOW I AM AT 150,000KM.

WHAT IS A WATER PUMP?
HOW DO I KNOW IT IS NOT WORKING?
DO I NEED IT REPLACED WITH A "METAL IMPELLAR"?

I believe that your year has the white impeller, which is improved over the old impeller which is black.

I do not blelieve that there are any issues with the white impeller.

A couple of weeks ago, I didn't even have an impeller.. I had lotsa black dust and debris though.. Now I have a metal impeller, a large bill, and no headaches!

My 98.5 had a White Impellar.
When I replaced it at 60,000 miles, it had two vanes cracked.

Such an improvement ???

Back in the cast-iron age a bad water pump didn't matter as much. All the new aluminum engines warp heads, spin bearings, or just die if they overheat.
Water pumps are a lot cheaper than engines.
Mine was about 50$, one hour, and one scraped nuckle.

It would probably be safer to say the the water pumps with white impellers have less issues. I don't think it is correct to say that the white impeller completely ended the problems of the impeller falling apart.

You asked how to tell if it's not working. You only have moments to see the temp gauge rising very fast, before your engine is seriously damaged. If the impeller is cracked and near self-destruction, there will be no external sign of it whatsoever. That's why people are replacing them proactively. Mine had some very small cracks at about 53,000 miles.
Were you just kidding about what a water pump is? It moves water from the engine, where it's heated, through the radiator, where it's cooled, and back to the engine. One of the things you can not go without except for a very short time.

If your going to do the timing belt then do it, but FYI the water pump failure are common in the Duratech's not so much the Zetecs
