Hey all, maybe someone can help here. I have a 1999 SVT contour and have driven it pretty hard over the years. The cluctch went out on it and I had that replaced with the exact same luke clutch that came out of it. Well, that was a couple thousand miles ago and now it is starting to grind when I upshift or downshift into third gear. Whould that be a syncronizer? Any recommendations would be helpfull.

Sounds like it might be a synchro like you mentioned. Just to make sure try bleeding your clutch first. If it is a synchro you're going to need major transmission work.

Mine is doing the same.

It seems to only happen at higher revs, and not at all if i'm just shifting into 3rd while stopped at a light or something.

Are synchros usually covered under a powertrain warranty. I don't think they're considered manual wear items like a clutch are they? Would this be expensive to fix?

I thought I read on here somewhere that if you were experiencing grinding when shifting, you should stay away from the tranny cocktail?

So far, I've just been trying to avoid going into 3rd and skipping from 2nd to 4th. Not ideal I know, but it's gotta be better than grinding into 3rd.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Randy.

I don't know if it's on the site somewhere but I regret doing the tranny cocktail. I've got the crunchy gearchange too and the cocktail has made it marginally worse. I'll be changing back soon.

what if you double shift, does it still grind then?

i remember when my superbeetle's synchro went out i had to double shift for about 3 months til i could afford a new set up.

give it a try, ya never know.
