Hi, I'm new to this group. I have a '99 SVT with about 43K miles. When it gets cold (which starts in September in Rochester, NY wink ) I get this very annoying engine noise that sounds like a ghost moaning. It is very loud, both inside and outside the car, and it goes away after about 10-15 minutes of driving and the engine is warmed up. Has anyone else encountered this?

Thanks for any tips.
Mike

It's the "Moose". Check FAQ. I live in the same general area as you, and my 99 Mystique has been moaning like crazy (so do I during our gray WNY winters). I presently have it scheduled to have the repair done according to the TSB.

Mike, I don't have the URLs for the TSB. I just printed out the FAQ page description of the problem, wrote down my own symptoms, gave it to the dealer and left the car there overnight. So, next morning when they started it up.....WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO......and they ordered the parts. I'll post results when I get them.

Thanks to the advice I got here, I took my car into service on 12/24. It took a long time to get the parts (they said they were on "national back-order"); they finally came in and were installed today -- $90 parts, $111 labor. So far, no moose! laugh

I found a lot of complaints about this problem, both here and in alt.autos.ford. If it is such a common problem, why hasn't Ford been pushed into making this repair at no charge for us?

The repair should have been covered by your 3yr/36,000 mile Bumper-to-bumper warranty.

Why did you PAY for it ???

Have you checked your power steering fluid, to make sure you have some and have you also checked the switch/pump on it. They will make loud noise if not working right

Thanks for the tip, but this time it looks like it was a classic case of "moosing." The new bypass valve, gasket, etc. is working. I'm back to the nice SVT growl -- which is the only noise I want to hear coming from under the hood!
