i have heard a lot of cars running around town that make the telltale hiss after a shift of a blow-off valve. the only problem is that i have noticed alot more recently on cars that dont seem to be turbo'd. like a ~2000 eclipse which to my very limited knowlege doesnt have an aftermarket turbo yet. is there some mod or something that causes a car to make that noise when the throttle is released to simulate a turbo. i could very well be wrong and all these cars have turbos. by the way, what is a wastegate? excuse my relative car ignorance, but im still learning alot. thanks.

There is a rice mod that was selling on eBay. With the click of a button, a speaker makes the hiss of a turbo. Nice to impress your friends; but it's obviously rice...

It goes nicely with the fake intercoolers

They actually have nice ones that hook into a vacuum line so it actually makes the noise at the appropriate times. Still its a stupid idea, even by ricer standards

There are Intakes for Honda's that look like Front Mount Intercoolers (FMIC).

They are hilarious looking and very rice.

They have like 4 90 degree turns and 4 feet of piping.

They offer no gains what so ever except for looks.

The wastegate is located either in the Turbine housing of the turbocharger, or in some turbokits, off the exhaust manifold before the turbo.

It allows the exhaust gas to bypass the turbine, thus controlling the amount of boost you get. The more closed it is, the exhaust gases are forced to go through the turbine, and the more boost you get.

Boost controllers in affect tap into the vacuum line between the wastegate and the intake manifold to either bleed of boost pressure or regulate it and thus control the opening of the watsegate.

The hiss or whoosh you hear on most torbo cars is the Blow Off Valve, or Bypass valve.

These vent pressurized air to atmosphere or to a point back in front of the turbo compressor, thus allowing the compressor to continue spinning without intake back-pressure/resistance, when you close the throttle body butterfly.

Not having one on a turbo car is just dumb, as it allows for compressor "surge", a situation where the pressure wave in your intake bounces back and forth between the throttle body butterly and the compressor wheel, causing cyclic stresses on the compressor shaft as the compressor wheel rapidly speeds up and slows down in conjuction with the direction of the pressure wave.

You can hear when this is happening on a poorly setup turbo system when they back of the gas, i.e. when shifting gears.
It sounds kind of like "cha-cha-cha-choo" - VERY BAD!

I was surprised once because I heard this sound on a new model stock looking WRX. Then later heard it on a stock looking Talon. Would this WRX owner probably be trying to mod his turbo in a dumb way on a new car or could this actually be a faulty turbo (is this possible)?

They may have fitted an aftermarket BOV on either, but have the spring too hard so that it doesn't open up enough to release the pressure properly. This is dumb on their part.

Rally cars often sound like this cos they run high boost and sacrifice turbo life in order to keep the BOV shut whilst on boost and also want the BOV faster acting on shifts.

If you buy an open air element it can kinda sound like a hissing sound between shifts, but its at about 20% throttle or so.
