Hello!!!

Ok ... here's the situation. My car has had the CEL on for quite a while. The code that comes up is 332-EGR not opening. My mechanic is the one who pulled this code and has been trying to figure out what is causing this code to come up. We have already changed the EGR solenoid, EGR valve, and the DPFE. He has also cleaned the exhaust tube to the the EGR. What else is there that can be done? And, what exactly is going on with the car to cause the CEL to come on? Perhaps I should change the O2 sensor? It seems like everyone else has this problem and the solution seems to be to change the O2 sensor. Please help me!!! My car has been to two different mechanics with no luck. If anyone can suggest anything then maybe I can go back to my mechanic with these suggestions. But, somebody please help me!!!

What is the exact computer code? Example: P1131 or P0420

Then put the computer code in the following web site
Diagnostic Touble Codes for OBD II

You will then have a better idea of what the problem is. You may also want to post the problem code to see if anyone else has had that problem and they may give you some pointers.

Makes sure you post the year, engine, and transmission info on your car when asking for help. That way we know what to reference.

The 95 still used 3-digit EEC codes. 96-on used the 4-digit "P" codes.

Run this quick test:

Disconnect the vacuum line to the EGR valve. Attach a short piece of rubber hose to the valve connector on the EGR valve. With the engine running at an idle, suck on the hose like you're trying to drink a milk shake. Did the engine drop RPMs or even stall?

If yes, the EGR valve is good and the intake passages are clear and the problem is elsewhere.

If no, either the valve is bad or the passages are blocked.

A mechanic should know to do this.

A description of the Ford EGR system is available here: http://www.smpcorp.com/download/view/tt2q00.pdf

In my case I did not find this to be true. I ran the test that you are talking about (although I used a handheld vacuum pump instead of my mouth), and the RPMs did drop. This made me think that the problem was elsewhere (as you suggest). Well, after replacing the EVR, DPFE, and finally the EGR valve, I finally took a look behind the TB gasket and it was totally clogged.

Monkey78: From the 332 code you posted, it sounds like you have a 95. (Probably a v6 ) Chances are the problem is clogged EGR passages behind the Throttle Body (TB) as mentioned above. Very common and cheap to fix.

Interesting..

I guess there must have been some flow through the clogged ports, but not enough for the DPFE sensor to have picked it up (or maybe it was too slow). If the passages were completely clogged to the flow of the EGR gasses, there's not really any way for the idle speed to be affected.

I take it that cleaning the passages fixed the problem.

Thanks for pointing out the exception to the test.

Steve

Can I just say that I LUV YOU GUYS!!! I've been working on stuff and had been wondering about my EGR valave. But I just tried the above mentioned test and the car responded perfectly. I've cleared my TB/EGR ports and now am left with a CEL indicating 122 (TPS low voltage). Hopefully only $20.00 to go.

Well ... apparently my mechanic cleaned out the pipes behind the throttle body. However, obviously this still hasn't worked since the CEL light is still on. So ... my mechanic thinks that he missed something else that he wants to try and check on. So, now my question is ... what's left to try and clean or replace seeing as how he's done practically everything that's been suggested on these forums. Can somebody please suggest exactly what kinds of things can be done to fix the code 332 for my 1995 Contour. Also, I'm thinking that perhaps it may be a good idea to just take it to the dealer assuming that they have a better idea of the emissions system of the Contour. How much would that cost me if I were to go that route? Someone please help me!!! I'm going nuts trying to get this problem fixed!!! My mechanic seems to be going in the right direction, but, he's still failing to hit the nail on the head!!! Please help me!!!
