Last summer, I spun a main on my 97 SE V6. Found a 99 cougar engine with under 10 grand on it and installed eagerly. Started having a throttle hang problem. Had this happen once before (idling at 4000 RPM) and I replaced the IAC motor and cured it. Figured the same thing was happening again, so pulled IAC off of old engine and tried that.....even worse. So I replaced the EGR valve........nothing changed! Bought a new IAC and tried that.....ok for a bit and it started again shortly after, very intermittent though. Called ford and asked if the part numbers between the 99 cougar and 97 tour co-incided. As I suspected, they were different. So I tried installing a 99 cougar IAC (new).....still no luck. Is it possible that the computer in my 97 is not accepting the 99 cougar IAC? And on the flip side of that, is the 99 engine not accepting the 97 IAC?
Incase anyone is wondering how I know that it is the IAC causing the problem, I have a $36,000 scan tool sitting in my shop........they work wonders, besides that I can beat on the IAC and it will quit hanging for about 100 miles.
Any help would be appreciated. My thoughts were to put in an aftermarket chip for a 99 cougar, my co-worker seems to think it will work?
