A good, hard, jerk will often get it. It's held in place by a ring around the shaft. I used a thin pry bar to force the shaft out.

What is this ring around the shaft and how do you get it off???

I quess you don't have a service manual. It shows the method using a special tool , OTC makes it. It is a "C" shaped casting that fits between the trans axle and the joint and with a slap hammer you pull it out. As someone stated and I have done this on my mothers Taurus, you can use a pry bar. Put a piece of wood against the transmission to protect the case, if it is the left side. With the pry bar between the inner joint and wood it should seperate without too much effort. I have to do a joint soon also. Good Luck

Tick tock, tick tock ... 11:30 AM is rolling around quick. One thing I learned in the last year is never work on the car under time constraints (assuming it's running). Too much stress. Sorry, but I can't actually answer any of your questions.

I don't have a scanner or I would send you the Ford Factory manual showing the procedure. The ring you are refering to is the "Drive Shaft Bearing Retainer Clip" which incircles the splined potion of the axle near its end. This shaft fits into the splined differental side gear and the clip springs into its grooved portion to retain it. You have to overcome this (the clips) interference fit when you pull the joint out. Do not re use this clip. Spend 15 bucks and at least get a Haynes manual.

You don't really have to worry about the ring (clip), until after you get the shaft out. Once it is out, you'll be able to see what we're talking about. It's basically just a spring mechanism to keep the shaft from working its way out. For what it's worth, the shaft goes back in a lot easier than it comes out.
