Looks like some grease is being sprayed around under the engine, near where the driver's side drive axle comes out of the transmission. I'm guessing the inner CV boot has a hole though I haven't seen or felt one yet.

1. Anything else I should check that might be slinging grease down there?

2. If I find a hole is there any way to plug it up until I have time to replace the boot? (duct tape?)

3. Haynes manual says boot and CV joint can be removed with the axle still on the car - has anyone tried that? Is it manageable?

Thanks!

Why do I still love it?

Yes the inner boot sounds like its shot,no duct tape etc wont do it!.Yes you can change the inner boot without pulling the whole shaft but you need the lower balljoint etc out.If you use the 'genuine' Ford boot kit you will need the special cv boot clip pliers..
