Hey,

Just bought my '98 contour this weekend and am loving it so far. Just a few questions:

1. Odometer and trip odometer were working fine and then they just stopped at 84,999 KMs. Wouldn't roll over to 85,000 KMs. The trip odometer also stopped? Any ideas on what this could be. Everything else on the instrument cluster still working fine.

2. There is a slight grinding noise when shifting into 3rd. Doesn't always happen, but most of the time. Is this a sign for the need of a new clutch? Would the transmission cocktail solve this problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Randy.

Hello. It could be a bad speed sensor. If it has a speedometer cable which I think it doesn't, that could be bad. Check your fuses also. That's all I can think of.

The speedometer cable was only on the early 95's, IIRC. My guess would be a speed sensor.

Never had a contour apart, but have had circuit board cracks on other fords behind the guages in dash.

They use a stepper motor to turn odo by gears.
Soldering iron required.

my SVT's odometer stops every once in awhile...just give the dash a nice pop and it picks right back up.

as far as grinding while shifting into third, try the tranny cocktail first. If that doesn't help it's possible your 3rd gear syncronizer has gone bad. Does it seem to grind worse if you shift at higher RPM's?

With both of these stopping at XX,999, it makes it sound like there is something binding or hanging in the instrument panel itself...Don't know what.

My odometer started working again. Everything seems fine with it now.

As for the 3rd gear grinding, it seems to only happen at higher revs, and not at all if i'm just shifting into 3rd while stopped at a light or something.

Are synchros usually covered under a powertrain warranty. I don't think they're considered manual wear items like a clutch are they? Would this be expensive to fix?

I thought I read on here somewhere that if you were experiencing grinding when shifting, you should stay away from the tranny cocktail?

So far, I've just been trying to avoid going into 3rd and skipping from 2nd to 4th. Not ideal I know, but it's gotta be better than grinding into 3rd.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Randy.
