I am very upset. About 3 weeks ago my tranny started shifting rough, making me a tad nervous. However, i didn't think much of it, and kept on driving. One morning i was coastng at 30 mph when my tach suddenly dipped from 3K down to 1K like a brick, but immediatly went back up. The whole car seemed to drag during this dip, but quickly returned to normal. Once again, i shrugged it off, hoping nothing was wrong. The rough shifting did continue, so i decided to see if i had any trouble codes. Nope, nothing there. So, i changed the tranny fluid. Still shifting rough. Friday i was driving along when the tach dipped below 1K again. However, this time it did it 7 or 8 times. By this time i know something is wrong, so i bring it to a dealer. Immediatly they say its the tranny, and they would plug it in and let me know on Mon. Well, today they called said i have no trouble codes, and did a full diagnostic on the tranny, and they drove it for over 30 miles, and they say it drives like new. I KNOW there is something wrong with my car, so they said that the head mechanic, who lives 40 miles away would take it home and see if it acts up. If they don't find anything, what do i do? I think it may be a fuel injector, or fuel filter, or even a TPS, because the tach sometimes dips when im idling, and i have been getting pretty bad gas mileage (around 20 at best) Also, my cat stinks sometimes when i go up hills. So, i have no clue what to do. The car only has 45K on it. It is a 1998 SE, v6. So, any ideas? Does this even sound like a tranny problem???

Recently Aquired a 95 SE.
Shifting was rough and often to late.
Found PCV hose had a hole and was colapsing.
3 1\2 inches of 5\16 hose cured that!

Engine ran fine before and after, so much
for a major vacuum leak.

20 mpg is average fuel consumption for the Contour.
Highest mpg is about 30 with constant highway driving...

Might be the problem. Mabye you need a new one. If it stinks, its probably bad.
On second thought, you would have a CEL probably.

If the cat stinks when you step on the gas then it is working. It is when they get old and you get on the gas that the catalytic converters don't stink as bad because the efficiency drops off over time.

I got my car back yesterday. I sure missed her! However, the dealer couldn't get it to act up. So, they said that if it does it again, to bring it back in. Overall, its driving good, but not nearly as good as it used too. I know something is wrong, but everyone i bring it too says it seems fine, and "drives like new." As for the cat, it is working properly, or it wouldn't stink. I still think it could be fuel related, TPS, fuel injector, etc, and surplus fuel is being dumped into the cat. I mentioned this to the dealer, and they said "its possible, but there was no engine trouble codes." So, anyways, thanks for the help, and if anyone else has any more ideas, let me know.

Mine was rough on the UPSHIFT

Torque Converter Failure

It only acted up with me ,the dealer drove it =NO PROBLEM

Finally the CODE locked in =TRANSMISSION

They pulled and checked all solenoid valves inside=ALL OK

Therefore Book says replace Torque Converter

So far all OK
