Ok, here goes..this may sound a little bit limited in information but I'd like to know if this sounds like the start of something big to any of you guys.. Today is 10/10/02. Last Saturday, (10/5/02), I was making a quick trip to the store..when i came to a stop, the car began to shake a bit, RPM's fluttered a bit under 500 for only a couple seconds..then it fixed itself.. I can't remember if I came to a bit of an abrupt stop or not, but thats what happened. That hasn't happened since. However, this morning, when I started it up, it started up roughly like it wasn't getting enough fuel or power for just a couple seconds... you could even see the interior floor lights flickering a bit. I shut it off and started it again- same thing pretty much. I shut it off again and started it..- same thing.. The fourth time I started it, it was fine.. however, when I shifted into reverse, the RPM's shot down real low, the car hesitated, and then fixed itself.. also, sometimes when coming to stops in traffic, the RPM's sit at like 500.. it doesn't feel like its affecting the car any, but i think it might be a little low. Hasn't stalled or anything.
It drove perfectly fine though.. so I don't know what's going on. I know this could most definetely be a number of things, but if anyone knows where to start and what's common, that would be a world of help..
By the way, my car is a 98 LX Contour, 2.5 L Duratech, with 50 K miles.
Thanks.

Two things that come to mind are the Idle Air Control Valve and a possible vacuum leak. I'm sure there are others.

In addition to the above good suggestions: Replace the fuel filter, and inspect/replace the air filter if dirty. Your plugs & wires should be OK, but at 50K your car will run smoother with new ones.

Don't worry about it, I've learned a ton on this site myself, including what and LIM (lower intake manifold) is as well as UIM (upper intake manifold) is. I actually cleaned mine too using the how to that is in the FAQ section of this site. It looks kind of hairy when you first look at it, but once you get in there and fiddle around a little, things work out okay. Just takes some balls to get started, thats all.
