'97 Sport 2.5 V6 MTX 123,000 miles. I experience an itermittent miss accelerating through the 3-4K range. It doesn't happen consistently - maybe once or twice a day. Doesn't seem to matter if the engine is hot or cold, but tends to do it more when its cold. Its very abrupt - i.e. the car really jerks.

It has never stalled on me as a result of the miss, but it has stalled twice for my brother. Both cases left him unable to start immediately afterward and in one case, he almost ran the battery down trying to get it going. I've read a lot of posts about fuel starvation/filter/pump/pump screens but I'm not sure if that's it.

It seems like it just loses spark for one second during the acceleration, the car stutters, and then it accelerates out normally. I'd really like to fix this, don't like the idea of getting stranded.

Had a dealership work a CEL about 2 months ago - they replaced an O2 sensor, intake manifold gasket, and cleaned the throttle body. (The problem existed before this work was done).

Love the car - hate the problem. Help?

How old are the plugs and plug wires?

Have you ever clean the intake manifolds?

Check the FAQ and do it if you have not.
This should have been listed in the scheduled general maintenance part of the manual considering how quickly and thoroughly they get gunked up.

I don't really know. I've only owned it 13 months(11,000 miles). Wouldn't plugs/wires produce consistenly poor performance? Aside from the very occasional stutter, the car revs smooth and accelerates evenly.

I haven't. I would think that the dealer who put an new intake manifold gasket on would have cleaned the intakes (or at least recommended it if they looked bad), wouldn't you? I looked at the FAQ but didn't see anything that sounds like my problem.

Pulled a plug and the gap was pretty gross. Since the car has so many miles and the plugs looked so bad, I put in new plugs and wires. Autolite wires and Bosh Platinum+4 plugs.
The overall performance feels improved - smoother acceleration. I haven't tracked my gas mileage (I don't drive very economically). Haven't experienced the miss since - so far, so good! Thanks.
