ETayrien,
I would start by replacing the bulb and cleaning the contacts. The speed of the blink will increase to indicate that the bulb is bad. To test it, you might want to just switch the right side bulb with the left and see if the right side now blinks fast.
Not really sure why it doesn't click off automatically. It could be a bad directional unit on the steering column. That might also explain why it clicks so fast. I would first start by chcking all the bulbs and connections.
Hope it helps.

Check your left side blinker bulbs. One of them is most likely burned out.

Yeah, those guys who posted before are right, it IS one of the left bulbs that is out. They blink fast because FORD installs solid state relays in the Contours, and they blink fast when resistance gets higher (opposite of mechanical flashers), because that was designed as a bulb out driver warning feature (so they say). I replaced my factory ford S.S. flasher with an aftermarket S.S. flasher (like what big trucks come with) and now mine blinks the same whether it has 1 bulb or 10 bulbs wired in the circuit. It is because I've been tinkering around with making LED taillights for my car, but LEDs hardly draw any current and it was making my blinkers go fast like you're talkin, so putting the aftermarket S.S. flasher in got rid of that stupid bulb out feature (which I think was just designed as a good ploy to confuse people into taking their cars to the F*** Dealer so they can get like 50 bucks or somethin to diagnose it)
Also by the way, the signal not clicking off at the end of a turn is an UNRELATED problem. That is a mechanical problem with the device that resets the lever when steering wheel is turned back. Mine does that too. I haven't had the chance to get in there and repair it, but it doesn't even matter now, because I am in the habit off turning it off manually and so it is just second nature to me now. The right one is even starting to behave like that too lately. I just try and remember that Model-T Fords didn't have that feature either

bulb still works. its just faster now. when i put the emergency flashers on, both left and right bulbs flash at normal speed. then, get this, the signal was working _normally_ this afternoon for 20 minutes, until i got almost home, when it went postal again. jeez, you got me. i can tell you for a fact tho, that the blinker still works. its just faster.
edit: scratch that - front blinkers work normally, rear one IS out. Duh. i dont know about the lever tho. who knows, i guess i can just chalk it up to another quirk of my car

It's not some big conspiracy - many cars have "Bulb Out Detection" now. Not sure if it's part of the FMVSS or not, but otherwise, how else would you know a bulb is out? I wish there was an indicator for headlamps, foglamps, and center tail light as well. Also, Ford Motor (the people that design the circuits) doesn't get anything out of a dealership charging $50 for a diagnosis. Actually, anything charged to diagnose a bulb out is highway robbery, especially since most places charge 1 hour (or even half hour) minimum labor, more than enough for determining what bulb is out and replacing it. I'm sure Ford charges much more than, say, NAPA for bulbs though. FWIW, I have the same "on again, off again" bulb right now. Didn't work for the last 3 days, didn't work this morning, worked fine on the way home just a minute ago. I have a bulb ready to go, but it's raining. I bet it's a bad connection at the bulb, instead of the bulb itself in my case.
