I have about 90K kms on my car...should I change the transmission fluid? I don't know if it has ever been changed, and the maintenance schedule just says "inspect fluid level"...it never says "replace transmission fluid". The shifter's starting to get that peanut buttery feeling these past few cold days...maybe I'll do the "tranny cocktail". But what's the difference between ATX and MTX fluid? Could using ATX fluid in an MTX have undesireable consequences (i.e. excessive wear, etc.)?

I think I switched over to Synthetic at about 100,000 it does make a difference especially in the cold weather. I dont think there is any difference as far as ATX or MTX. Mobil 1 makes a Synthetic tranny fluid for ATX and that is what I use and most others I know use as well.

Laura, did you do the "tranny cocktail" mix, including the Ford friction modifier? And what does the friction modifier do...make the fluid more viscous or less viscous?

That's strange...I just check Mobil's website and they don't appear to make an MTX fluid...why would that be?

Replace it. Your tranny calls for Mercon ATX fluid. Use Mobil 1.
A good rule of thumb, even though not in print is to change it as often as you would an auto tranny... every 50,000km. But yes for sure!!!! at 100,000km.
You will feel a difference

I just used Mobil 1 straight up. I didnt use a Friction modifier but next time i might use it. I think it helps to make things a little more smooth.
