Guru's,
I've just bought a 95 Mystique V6 MTX, loaded except spoiler and sunroof. Everything works fine except the CEL is on intermittantly and the engine won't back off when I take my foot of the gas (intermittantly). It almost luck reluctant cruise control. It just kind of eases off eventually. I've put into neutral a couple of times and it just revs up unloaded and then eases off. I went to AutoZone and coded at 331 (?) The guy there said I should clean out my IAC and EGR valves? What? How?
Thanks

Other things to look into (search the forums) when you get a chance:
moose (related to your problems same fix I think)
water pump (no happy)
wiring harness (recall if you are under a certain amount of miles)

according to my haynes manual there is no code 331...there are codes in the range of 326-337 and those all have to do with problems with the egr valve and/or its related components...

sounds to me like its time for u the do the egr port cleaning so many of us have had to do on our own cars lately...go to the mods sections ( i think) and look for a how-to on cleaning the egr ports behind the throttle body...not very hard as i was able to do it and im a mo-ron ...

get yourself a haynes manual and study up on the how-to posted here and check out the pics they were a great help to me....u'll have to find a throttle body gasket to replace the old one and u'll need a can of throttle body or intake cleaner (i used b12 chemtool intake cleaner)...it worked great and i only needed a small can....also u'll need either a small pick and hook type tool set (found at walmart and/or lowes) or as i used a small screwdriver that came in my computer tool set ..its too small to use on the pc but was perfect for chiseling out the carbon deposits...

the problem is that carbon builds up in the passages and on the back of the throttle body clogging up the egr passages and in turn making your car run weird

it also involves removing the throttle body, acelerator/cruise cables so that would be a good time to give them a quick spray as well...some of us have noticed a sticking feeling in teh gas pedal

dont be afraid its easy...i took my time and let my car sit for a few days while i did that and cleaned my filter and maf as well but it can be done in a couple hrs or so if working straight thru

the other problem with the high revs is throttle hang and the posted link indicates...a pretty normal occurance on the mtx cars....the dirty egr is common too

good luck and ask away if u need more help

also a few more things for u to know about the car in case u haven't read up on some of it already

waterpumps are notorious on these cars....the thermostats tend to go as well

only use double platinum spark plugs in the engine....motorcraft or autolite is your best best (see plugs i have in my sig below)...alot of people try to use bosch +4's or ngk's or some other plug but they are not whats best for your car...due to the nature of the duratec v6 these plugs wear quickly and unevenly particularly on the rear bank

fuel filter and fuel pump are starting to need to be replaced on some of the older cars as well

dont let me scare u with these things...generally u can look at these as maintainance although the waterpump can be serious if it suddenly goes on you

if u are into performance at all there are a number of filters on the market... i think overall k & n has proven to be the best...theres another filter setup (the kkm) but it has been proven to collapse or implode at high rpms...there are though many who have not had a problem...exhaust systems plenty of bling bling wheels....superchargers, turbos(coming soon to a duratec near u) nitros...several versions of the 3.0 duratec that u can upgrade to if u so desire and have to dough

oh and be glad u dont have an atx

good luck and welcome to the site

According to http://www.contour.org/FAQ/FAQ.php?s=probs&displayid=10, P0331=Spark Knock has not been sensed.

The following is from the Ford TSP:

Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P0326 (KS1) and P0331 (KS2) indicate spark knock has not been sensed. DTC P0325 (KS1) and P0330 (KS2) with MIL on indicate spark knock has not been sensed. A spark knock occurred and the sensor circuitry did not respond by adjusting spark timing.

Possible causes:
-- PCM not receiving the signal at high altitude.
-- Open or short in harness.
-- Damaged knock sensor.
-- Damaged PCM.

* Key off.
* Disconnect PCM. Inspect for damaged or pushed out pins, corrosion, loose wires, etc. Service as necessary.
* Install breakout box, connect PCM.
* Key on.
* Read DC voltage between suspect Knock Sensor signal Test Pin and the SIG RTN Test Pin at the breakout box.
* Is the reading between 2.4 and 2.6 volts?

This is a 95, so he should have the older 3 digit codes. I would agree with gdub about there being no 331 code for the 95s. A dirty EGR/intake and carbon build up could explain a lot including the hanging throttle.
Might want to clean the TB itself and check that the return spring and cables are in good working order.

Oh, yeah,
Is there any way to tell if I've got an original waterpump? Everything seems cool in that dept now, but I don't want to wait until I'm stuck on the side of the road.

No way to tell without taking the impeller off and looking at it (white vs. the older black plaster impellers)

It's pretty easy to remove -- there's a howto in the FAQ.
