The water pump failed last week. On Saturday I replaced it with an autozone metal impeller. The original failed different than I have seen written about before. Mine has about 3/4" of the core of the impeller still on the shaft. The outer part of the impeller broke up, but there was no part that obviously cracked. (It looks like someone put it on a very chaep lathe and shaved it down to 3/4". (Now, it could be that the part that cracked off got caught in the housing and tore up what was left.)

In my previous post about a week ago, Terry Haines mentioned checking the stainless steel cone inside the housing. (Thank you Terry) It seemed to be intact, still solid in the housing an no apparent damage.

Is this just different way that the WP fails?

Yes, its just a bad part all around. Mine failed somewhere between the norm and what you are describing.
