can pretty much guarantee that you have return fuel just by the year of your car..returnless was in the late 99's and 00's.

Returnless fuel systems have less parts (no vacuum operated fuel press reg), although the CDW27 returnless pump leaves something to be desired. Given a good pump, that's one plus. You are also losing the parts needed to get the fuel back to the pump from the engine. Saves money and assembly time for the manufacturer.

Also, the fuel pressure is now controlled by the PCM instead of an independant mechanical device. More precise control means better economy, power, and probably emissions. You can also boost fuel pressure with a chip if you have returnless (cheap way to get "bigger injectors" if you are already doing a chip).

I've been told that the main reason for the returnless system is because of the complications of the warm fuel returning to the tank on a return type system. The warm fuel causes problems with the vapor management systems. As the smog rules get stricter and stricter, the controls need to change, and often become more complex.

The additional complexity of the returnless system includes a fuel pressure control module. The control module receives the signal from the PCM, doubles it, and transfers the signal to the fuel pump. I suppose that the control module also serves somewhat like a relay, protecting the PCM.

Looking at the posts on hesitation problems and having my car begin to do the same has me wondering- is there a better-than-stock fuel pump out there that I can buy for my '00 Contour returnless system?
