Interesting , I have a Zetec too. Seems to be controversy on weather it is an "interference" or "free wheeling" engine. both my local Ford dealer servcie man and gates.com say it's a free wheeling engine. So if your timing belt does goit won't damage the valves. I bought one with 96K on it with the original timing belt. I replaced the belt but the old one looked near perfect after 96K miles!? Ford does not list a belt change in the maint. schedule. they say "good for the life of the car".

my wifes car is a 95 mystique with about 110K miles on it. i thought that the timing belt went on it last weekend. it turns out that the belt was actually still good but the tensioner pulley broke. the belt was actually still good but put a new one on anyhow. i do not believe the zetec is an interference engine. Put a new belt and tensioner on and the car runs fine.

if you can handle the hassle of getting it towed when it breaks then i say let it go until it does. otherwise change it at about 100K miles. while you are there changing the belt, change the tensioner too. i am not the only one on this forum that has reported the tensioner breaking!

ive had this problem before but now it has become louder. when at a red light and i run the ac or defog a loud vibrating sound comes from under the hood, when i put the car in neutral it will stop, when it goes back into drive it is loud , when i let the car creep a few feet it gets alittle more quiet, not much, and when i take off the noise stops, with the ac on the pick up(take off from a red light) is much slower, it defintely drags,
and also had problem before and replacing the serpentine seemed to have quieted the condition down a bit, serpentine belt has been replaced at 32.6k miles and at 64k miles, my question is this: ive heard of other belts lasting way longer than mine, i have had to replace 2 belts with in 32 k miles, could there be a mechanical condition in which the belt is being caused to wear down more than it should? what could it be and how can i fix it?

should i also replace belt tensioner to avoid the problem of it lettting go and having to rebuild the engine

Timing belt didn't break.

Is there a TSB about changing the "tensioners" when ya change the belt ?

I thought that if the belt got whacked-out, it wouldn't bend a valve.

Has this happened to anyone else ?

Not sure that this is exactly what happened yet. Mechanic's hasn't done a tear down yet.

( Aren't the serpintine belt & the timing belt one & the same ?)

Thanks,

jim

I have a 96 Contour 186,000 Miles. Trans rebuilt at 177,000. At that time mechanic changed water pump, both belts and thermostat. I also got new tensioners. I have new fuel injectors and oxygen sensor. But I still have performance problems. I get the same fault code, P0171. Cyl 1 Bank 1 too lean. new injectors didn't correct. Help!!

This is exactly what my 96 Contour is doing! It started after I had the transmission rebuilt and new belts, tensioners and water pump. Please reply to r_garrett@insbusplan.com if you find a solution. Thank you!
